For China's smart home, "open source" is the way out

Recently, SAP, the largest software company in Europe, decided to allocate 2 billion euros of special investment in the Internet of Things to invest in hardware products that connect all the devices from home to car to the Internet. Among them, smart home should be regarded as the fastest growing field, but as a country with huge demand, China's smart furniture industry has been in a state of tepid. Where is the problem?

For China's smart home, "open source" is the way out.

China's smart home is still in its infancy

China's huge population base means that there is a great demand for intelligent hardware, including smart home hardware products. According to the "China's smart home equipment industry development prospects and investment opportunities analysis report" provided by the Prospective Industry Research Institute, the size of China's smart home market in 2012 was 102.22 billion yuan, and by 2015 this figure rose to 300 billion yuan. It is estimated that the size of China's smart home market in 2016 will be 381.3 billion yuan, up 27.1% year-on-year; in 2017 it will be 481.7 billion yuan, up 26.3% year-on-year; in 2018 it will be 600 billion yuan, up 24.6% year-on-year. From this, we can understand that in the next few years, China's smart home industry has a "eye-popping" market prospect.

At present, there are many small, medium and small enterprises in the smart home industry, such as Haier, Midea, Gree, TCL, and Alibaba, Huawei, LeTV, Xiaomi, Meizu, etc. There are countless. However, even with excellent market prospects and so many incomers, the domestic smart home industry has not been able to develop, but it is only in its infancy, and its market share and development are extremely uncoordinated.

The reason why China's smart home is not warm

Throughout the global smart home industry, the first to win is Amazon's smart speaker Echo, which integrates all the smart home hardware and then controls it with the voice assistant Alex, achieving a unified overall pace. However, when it comes to technology, some of China's enterprises are not lost to Amazon, and the market has great potential. So, what is the reason for this current tepid situation?

Misunderstanding of the definition of "smart home"

Taking smart home appliances as an example, most of the home appliances on the market today are only home appliances with networking functions, and then with an APP, it becomes a so-called "smart home appliance", and this is not really "smart". For example, turning on the lights requires people to remotely control through the mobile app, and the brightness needs to be adjusted by itself. Can it be called "smart" for home appliances that rely entirely on hands for APP operations? Obviously not, It is just a "pseudo-intelligence".

Before the arrival of smart homes, if domestic manufacturers can't correctly digest the concept of "smart", they will eventually be immersed in the wave of intelligence.

Industry chain is too loose

For domestic smart home hardware, APP is one of their main consoles, while domestic manufacturers' apps are for their own products. However, the performance of the manufacturers' own products is also uneven, and the smart home hardware is also involved in many fields such as home appliances, security, etc. We cannot ask a family to use only one brand of smart home hardware. At this time, the problem is coming. Do we still need to switch between several apps for the smart home service? If it is a small series, I would rather use ordinary home products, and I don't want such complicated operations.

In this regard, domestic manufacturers should learn from Amazon Echo and Apple's HomeKit. By cooperating, integrating several hardware into one platform, simplifying the operating procedures, and achieving a win-win situation is not better?

The mining of user needs is not enough

The emergence of a product means that it must be able to solve a problem in one aspect of people's lives. According to the survey on user needs in the China Smart Home Market Research Report 2015 released by Analysys think tank, we can see that for smart homes, the most demanding requirement is to “control”, which should be the most basic and easiest. The requirements that have been realized.

However, this is not enough to meet the needs of users. For example, a smart sweeping robot, which first needs people to open, and then starts to clean up the ground rubbish, but the sweeping robot we expect is able to run on its own, as long as the debris on the floor of the home has passed certain standards. It can be cleaned up by itself. Of course, smart floor assistance is also needed here. However, the current smart sweeping robot can't do this, it is a performance that the user's demand is not deep enough.

These are just a few of the major problems in the domestic smart home industry. In addition, there are still many problems that hinder the development of the domestic smart home industry, such as the cost and price of smart home products, network security and so on. However, the most important issue is that the links between the upper, middle and lower reaches and the same level are not close enough. After all, in today's society, “closed-door construction” will only make your own road narrower and narrower, and eventually move toward a dead end. Only through contact and communication can we know the needs of current users and promote the improvement of hardware manufacturers and technology providers to improve the overall level and development of domestic smart homes.
