The way each scanner reads a bar code is different, but the end result is that the information is converted into a digital signal and then converted into data that can be read or compatible with the computer, either through the scanner or between the scanner and the host. The decoding software in a separate device is completed, and the decoder identifies and distinguishes the barcodes and then uploads them to the host computer.
To upload data, you need to connect or interface with the host. Each interface must have two different layers: one is the physical layer (hardware), and the other is the logical layer, which refers to the communication protocol. Commonly used interface methods are: keyboard port, serial port or direct connection. When using the keyboard interface mode, the data of the bar code symbols transmitted by the scanner is considered by the PC or the terminal as the data sent by the keyboard, and their keyboards can also perform all functions. When the connection using the keyboard port is too slow, or other interface methods are not available, we will use the serial port connection. There are two meanings of direct connection here. One means that the scanner does not need to add the decoding device to directly output data to the host, and the other refers to the decoded data not directly connected to the host through the keyboard.
Some common terms:
DualInterface: The scanner can directly connect two different devices and automatically configure and communicate with each terminal. For example, a CCD is used to connect to IBM's POS terminal during the day, and it will be connected to one at night. The portable data terminal is used for commodity inventory, and the built-in dual interface function makes the conversion between the two devices very easy.
Flash Memory: Flash memory is a chip that can save data without power supply. It can rewrite data in an instant. WelchAllyn's products use flash memory instead of the original PROMs to make the product more upgradeable.
HHLC (HandHeldLaserCompatible): Some terminals without decoding equipment can only communicate by means of an external decoder. This communication protocol, commonly known as laser simulation, is used to connect CCD or laser scanner and external decoding. Device.
RS-232 (RecommendedStandard232): A TIA/EIA standard for serial transmission of computers with barcode scanners, modems, mice, etc. RS-232 usually uses a 25-pin plug DB-25 or a 9-pin plug DB-9. The communication distance of RS-232 is generally within 15.24m. If a good cable is used, the communication distance can be lengthened.
WandEmulation: When the bar is scanning a bar code, it sends a digital image to the decoder. When a scanner with a decoding function is connected to an external decoder, it will be scanned with a light pen. The gun translates the barcode into a digital image similar to a light pen and outputs it to the decoder.
