U.S. media said that for sports shoe manufacturers, producing the world's first sneaker to break the marathon 2-hour mark is becoming the ultimate arms race.
The US "Wall Street Journal" website reported on December 19 that Nike said this week that it would try to break the marathon 2-hour mark in the spring. According to informed sources, Adidas, Nike’s main competitor, is also making similar attempts. One person familiar with the matter said that Adidas's project had been developed for at least two years and a running shoe-like shoe had been developed.
One person familiar with the matter said that the Adidas project aims to help athletes who endorse Adidas breakthrough the 2-hour mark in the marathon. Adidas is the sponsor of the current marathon world record holder and Kenyan star Dennis Kimetto. In 2014, Kimetto set a world record of 2 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds in the Berlin Marathon. It is not yet clear how much worse Adidas is going to break the 2-hour target.
Adidas declined to comment. Nike said that as early as the summer of 2014, it initiated a project to break through the 2-hour mark of the marathon, but it began to study specific marathon sports shoe solutions more than a year ago.
