DARPA pushes the limits of CAD design through multi-million dollar research programs

Siemens, Georgia Institute of Technology, Michigan State University (MSU) and PARC were selected as DARPA's TRAansformative DESIGN (TRADES) research program.

The goal of TRADES is to develop a new digital modeling program that extends the limitations of current computer-aided design (CAD). TRADES technology will facilitate the creation of more complex objects, and optimize rapid "design and manufacturing" through 3D printing and other digital technologies.

"We have met the basic requirements of computer-aided design"

The expansion of CAD capabilities was first realized in 2016, when DARPA issued a call for research recommendations for the TRADES project. At the press conference, DARPA program manager Jan Vandenbrande explained the necessity of this development,

We have reached the basic limit that our computer-aided design tools and processes can handle. We need revolutionary new tools that can obtain demand from human designers and propose some new concepts, shapes and structures. The structure may even be against the sky.

Now Siemens NX â„¢ software has been selected as the expanded base platform. Billions of geometric shapes are presented on a simple platform. NX is Siemens' Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) platform designed to simplify the production process from initial simulation to final component production. It has been pre-programmed to handle various materials and composites, and has specific tools integrated for additive manufacturing.

In TRADES, these functions will be enhanced to meet objects with billions of geometric properties, such as jet engines, gas turbines, electric motors and generators.

Saigopal Nelaturi, a PARC researcher and TRADES project leader, explained: "Our work will enhance the ability to create, optimize, and manufacture these extremely complex designs by providing engineers with tools to define designs using simple procedures."

Nelaturi added a simple program that will automatically optimize the design parameters of the object and determine the best production settings.

Speaking of the overall cooperation, Dr. Suraj Musovich, Senior Scientist of Siemens Enterprise Technology explained the advantages of DARPA Group. He said: "Our team provides a unique combination of skills."

The expertise of Siemens and Georgia Institute of Technology lies in providing the user experience of CAD systems. In addition, Siemens provides extensive additive manufacturing and material knowledge for the manufacture of 3D printed turbine blades.

Dr. Musuvathy went on to explain that Michigan has "a strong background in multidisciplinary optimization", and PARC of the Xerox Research and Development Department will provide opportunities for "material scientists with extensive commercial application experience."

The TRADES project is an extension of DARPA's existing FIELDS (Manufacturing and Interoperability Engineering, Drafting, Design and Analysis) project announced by PARC earlier in 2017.
