American University Pushes New Technology to Improve Electric Car Battery Performance
Researchers from Rice University and Lockheed Martin have said that they have discovered a technology to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries through a single crystal silicon body. This technology can be used in the research and development of electric vehicle batteries, helping to produce newer batteries with stronger energy, longer life, and more charge / exchange cycles.

The technology was presided over by Sibani Lisa Biswal, an assistant professor at Rice University ’s School of Chemistry and Biomolecular Engineering, and was posted on the Chemistry of Materials webpage edited by the American Chemical Society earlier this month. Replacing graphite in a traditional battery with a single crystal silicon body is a key step in this technology.
Compared with ordinary batteries, the new lithium-ion batteries produced using this technology have a larger capacity. Another experiment proved that the ability of single-crystal silicon to absorb lithium is 10 times that of graphite. This means that if this technology enters the stage of commercial production, the performance and life of the batteries installed in electric vehicles will be greatly improved.
It is reported that the research and development of this new battery technology has won the support of the Lockheed Martin Advanced Nanotechnology Center of Excellence. Lockheed Martin is an American aerospace manufacturer and currently the largest defense industrial contractor in the world in terms of turnover.
