In June this year, the newly revised Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES Convention) will enter into force. According to the national standard GB18107-2000 "Redwood", the number of redwood species listed in the CITES Convention has risen to seven, and international trade management is more stringent. Insiders analyzed that the implementation of the Convention is bound to affect the import of mahogany raw materials in China. The import management of mahogany materials is becoming more and more strict, and the prices of domestic mahogany products, especially mahogany furniture, may rise.
Seven species of redwood species are listed in the Convention
According to the Redwood Branch of the China National Forest Products Industry Association, in March this year, the 16th Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora announced a revised list of new amendments. According to the list, Dalbergia chinensis, D. chinensis, Dwarf Dalbergia, Belize Dalbergia and L. serrata are listed in Appendix II as Appendix III. So far, seven species of trees in the "Redwood National Standard" have been included in Appendix I and Appendix II of the CITES Convention. According to the CITES Convention, these species must be subject to import and export licenses or re-export certificates in order to conduct international trade.
The staff of the National Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office introduced that the revised contents of the CITES Convention will be implemented on June 12 this year. The increase in redwood species in this convention, proposed by the important countries of origin, Thailand, Cambodia and some Central American countries, indicates that the export control of the redwood species in the country of origin will become increasingly stringent. In the long run, the international trade of redwood species will be tightened.
Jiang Xiaomei, a researcher at the Institute of Wood Industry of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, said that seven kinds of redwoods in the CITES Convention appendix list are rare in the domestic market except for the Brazilian black rosewood, Central American Dalbergia, and Belize Dalbergia products. Red sandalwood, Sian rosewood, Lushi black rosewood and dimpled Dalbergia are all common raw materials for mahogany products in China. It is understood that L. black Dalbergia is the top grade of black rosewood, the origin of which is Madagascar. Due to excessive early cutting, the resources of this species are very scarce.
In the short term, mahogany furniture will not rise
A number of mahogany producers said that starting from the beginning of this year, the demand for mahogany materials, especially Sian rosewood, has been rising. Yang Bo, chairman of Beijing Yuan Henry Hardwood Furniture Co., Ltd., said that the value of sandalwood rosewood, commonly known as lobular rosewood, has increased nearly 20 times in the past 13 years; Sian rosewood (commonly known as Siamese rosewood), dimpled Dalbergia and Barry Yellow Tantalum is a red rosewood, and its value has been rising in recent years. According to Wu Xinjian, president of Jinfei Redwood, the price of Dalbergia rosewood has increased by 30% compared with the end of last year, and the increase of Dwarf Dalbergia and Bali Dalbergia is also 15%-30%.
Will the inclusion of redwood species in the convention lead to a significant increase in the price of domestic mahogany furniture? In this regard, many manufacturers said that in the short term, the price of mahogany furniture will not rise significantly.
Zhu Dengfeng, general manager of Mingjia Red Sandalwood Hall, said: "Now the experience of manufacturers of mahogany furniture is relatively mature, and the price of materials is also constantly changing. Enterprises are expecting and preparing for this. Many companies are also stocking raw materials, most of them are merchants. Choose to raise prices slowly, and there will be no major fluctuations in furniture prices in the short term."
A number of mahogany producers in Beijing raised their prices at the beginning of this year. It is understood that Xuanming's products have increased by about 15% at the beginning of this year; Yang Bo also said that Yuan Henry products have raised prices by 15%-20% at the beginning of the year, and will raise prices again in October this year; Jinfei also said that products will be this year. The price increase is 20%-30%.

Although it has not been officially published, the content of the Convention gives us a signal that the import of materials is getting harder and harder. In foreign countries, the cutting and development of endangered species is similar to the trafficking of drugs, and it is necessary to be sentenced. Take Hainan Huanghua Pear as an example. You can buy it when you go to the port 10 years ago. It is very difficult to buy one now. Nowadays, many wood materials such as Sian rosewood, I guess it will be like this soon. At that time, many companies will face the dilemma of no rice.
Consumers can receive some affordable, well-crafted furniture when economic conditions permit. For example, Sian rosewood, the current price is an average of 100,000 yuan a ton, furniture products cost-effective, the rate of appreciation is very stable, will bring good returns to consumers.

What consumers and businesses need to understand is that 33 kinds of redwoods are not all valuable; many non-redwood species are even more valuable than some redwoods. Taking the CITES updated list of regulated species as an example, in addition to changes in redwood species, there are 48 species of Madagascar populations of Dalbergia and 84 species of Diospyros, which are also extremely valuable. Merchants should not easily purchase this, consumers should not buy a related product, because the mahogany gimmick.
Although it is still impossible to determine the impact of the Convention on the quantity and price of timber transactions, the import and export trade of species requires a license, at least in terms of time and financial costs for timber traders. In the eyes of Western countries, China’s reputation is not very good because of the large number of imported endangered species; there is indeed a situation of speculation in the country. For the sustainable development of resources, and for the establishment of a century-old store, it is hoped that domestic enterprises will operate in accordance with laws and conventions and legally develop resources for felling tree species.
