Gao Wen'an was born in Shanghai in 1943. He graduated from the Department of Architecture of the University of Melbourne in Australia in 1969. Founded in 1976 as " Gao Wen'an Design Co., Ltd. ", in 1990, it opened branches in Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. It is the first interior designer in Hong Kong to be transferred by an architect. Reporter: What is your ideal Chinese furniture?
Gao Wen'an: I think this should be something that represents modern Chinese people. It is modern and simple. Don't be too thick or too expensive. It is something that ordinary people can afford. To be specific, it is simple and a small part of Chinese wood, and then contains some Chinese culture. The ideal Chinese furniture should be very modern. This modernization is reflected in its ability to adapt to different environments and can be used in different countries and different decoration designs. In addition, the ideal Chinese furniture should also be an important place in the international furniture fair, which can be recognized.
Reporter: Others say that the definition of furniture designed for you is a very difficult thing. How do you position your furniture design?
Gao Wen'an: Or what I just said: simplicity, but there are stories in it. For example, those desk lamps, lamp holders I made with the floor tiles of the old house that was demolished, it looks a bit rough, but it has something inside, there is a story inside, but at the same time it is practical, I don’t care what culture you make, Must be practical. If you make a piece of furniture, you can only appreciate it. This is not furniture. It is a work of art.
Chinese furniture design still needs to break through
　　 Reporter: In your eyes, what is the current status of furniture design in China?
Gao Wen'an: There are some furniture designs that have been put in place. For example, the Dynasty (Hong Kong Dynasty Furniture Group), the furniture it designed is already a modern furniture with Chinese taste, but at present there is still no appealing furniture brand in China, which indicates that the design level of furniture still needs to be broken.
For example, in some domestic furniture design, some traditional style furniture copied the design of Ming and Qing furniture, did not start from the modern Chinese people's living habits, and added modern elements; while the simple style furniture mostly copied the furniture design style of Western countries such as Italy. There is no innovation in our own design, especially if we don’t integrate something that belongs to our own nation.
Of course, furniture design is a very fine branch. At the same time, consumers have low requirements for furniture, and operators have always been market-oriented. The pattern of low design and lack of furniture designers is also extenuating. .
To take the route of China
Reporter: What kind of countermeasures do you think should be taken to achieve breakthroughs in China's furniture design?
Gao Wen'an: I think we still have to follow the Chinese route. With the economic development, consumers will have higher requirements for furniture grades, but now the furniture that simply expresses the life of modern people is too boring, there is no deep culture, why can't we integrate Chinese culture? In the inside? Just as China’s economy is developing very well now, why is the house that is always covered is Spain? As a designer, we must design furniture that represents the Chinese level, starting from the living habits of modern Chinese people. It is quite critical to add Chinese elements to the design.
Look at Chinese folk things
Reporter: I would like to know your deepest feelings about furniture design in the interior design career of nearly 30 years. I hope to give you some inspiration through some of your design methods.
Gao Wen'an: I feel that furniture design is actually a very interesting thing and a very challenging thing. I see that the current Chinese furniture, many of them are imitating Western products, and the so-called traditional furniture can not be separated from the limitations of the Ming and Qing styles. From a design point of view, I think Ming and Qing furniture has reached its peak, it is very good Showing Chinese culture, there is no furniture that can surpass it in terms of display function, but practicality can still be used as a breakthrough point in furniture design.
I think it is necessary to look at the Chinese folk things and apply the folk things to the design. China has a vast territory. There are more than 50 ethnic groups in our country. Each nation has its own unique customs and many elements that reflect Chinese characteristics. I also hope that there will be more furniture designers who can find these Chinese elements.
