Plastic beer bottles pull PET ingredients

The increase in the use of plastic beer bottles in the international market has led to a greater demand for ethylene glycol (EG). Ethylene glycol is a raw material for producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is a plastic bottle for soft drinks and bottled water. Until recently, many people still think that PET bottles are not suitable for beer because of the permeability of the material, and soft drinks are very sensitive to oxygen and carbon dioxide. For this reason, beer in plastic containers is mostly sold to stadiums and special occasions like concerts because of the short shelf-life in those places.

But plastic bottle manufacturers have found a way to preserve the taste of PET containers for beer, which can last up to six months. Chandler said that the six-month shelves period is sufficient for most drinks. Beer bottle manufacturers have developed a barrier coating that prevents or reduces oxygen and carbon dioxide permeation. Containers with this coating design are five times more impermeable than PET bottles without such a coating. Another problem with the use of plastic bottled beer is the high temperature and pressure during pasteurization of the bottle. Some manufacturers use more heat-resistant resin bottles. There is also a part of the production commercial cold filtration process that processes beer to avoid this problem. There are also some manufacturers handling beer before bottling. In recent years, many problems with the use of plastic beer bottles have been well solved and consumers can accept them.
