Web publishing and traditional publishing (V)

6. Process
(1) Prepare raw materials.
At present, the key issue in producing digital content for online publishing is how to convert traditional readings into electronic documents. A quick way to obtain raw materials for digital content is to use the electronic documents of the publisher directly. At present, major domestic publishing houses have implemented computer typesetting and can provide original text documents and pictures very conveniently. Therefore, publishers should actively sort out the electronic documents of original and current library resources, and do a good job of sorting out and storing digital resources.
In addition, the main way to digitize traditional books is to scan. Beijing University Founder has developed a complete set of application systems that are suitable for web publishing. Beijing Scholars can also provide "high fidelity" digital solutions. Adobe also adapts to the trend of online publishing and develops a complete solution for e-paper. Using these technologies, traditional paper content can be converted into digital content in different formats for readers to download and read.
In addition, while paying attention to the digital publication of paper books, it is also necessary to develop new e-book varieties. Submitting an online draft and collecting online electronic content is also one of the ways to enrich raw materials.
(2) Digital copyright signing.
When publishers sign copyrights of books with the authors, they must pay attention to each book's electronic copyright (network communication right). The copyright of the contract should include digital copyright as much as possible, and be prepared for the circulation of the electronic book on the Internet. For books that have already been published, consideration should be given to making digital copyrights with the author.
(3) Material processing.
After obtaining the raw materials, online publishers need to process the raw materials according to the finalized final document format. If the final document is in PDF format, you need to use Adobe's software to process the raw materials. At present, PDF is the mainstream format for online publishing, and is dominant in Europe, America, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. If you use Founder Apabi, you need to use Apabi Maker to create e-book data format files.
(4) Distribution.
The e-book is an online payment download. After the digital content is created, it will be downloaded to the reader via the Internet.
This distribution channel is very important. The channel is the marketing of digital production. For current publishers, it is not wise to make e-book payment downloads and online payments on their own websites. The advertising, website promotion, online payment system establishment and maintenance costs are unwise. It is quite high, and it is more reasonable to ask professional network companies to represent e-books for paid downloads and periodic settlements. For example, China’s first e-book company, Boko (China), has been committed to the production and sales of online Chinese e-books, and has done long-term technical research and development and commercial practices around commercial positioning. There should be a high degree of credibility in the aspects of book sales, network security, digital copyright protection, and settlement. The cooperation between publishers should be a better choice. The release of the e-book of Shanghai Science and Technology Press was conducted in cooperation with online companies such as Baku and NetEase, and achieved good results.
7. budget
The establishment of a network publishing system mainly involves the following costs:
(1) The cost of computer software and hardware systems. Including the cost of renting the Founder software platform, editing the cost of the computer, scanner and other equipment for producing the electronic book, the cost of the website data server and the possible LAN server and network components.
(2) Get the cost of the original material.
(3) Staff salary.
(4) Other expenses.
8. Profit outlook
The following are predictions made by the online publishing industry in early 2000:
In 2000, the leader of the global Chinese publishing software, Peking University, launched the Apabi Chinese web publishing overall solution, and some domestic publishers began to try e-books.
In 2001, most publishers and online bookstores will begin e-book business.
In 2002, electronic textbooks and e-schoolbags began to be accepted in a few large cities such as Beijing.
In 2003, due to the improvement of technology, the e-books on the screen will feel very clear and comfortable.
In 2004, "your books" became the new darling of the publishing world and provided individuals with personalized books through electronic means.
In 2006, having a handheld reader became fashionable.
In 2008, you can buy e-books everywhere.
In 2015, half of the library's new books were e-books.
In 2020, sales of e-books exceed traditional molecular books.
In 2030, e-books will fully exceed traditional books.
It now appears that although this prediction appears somewhat optimistic, the prospects for the online publishing industry it portrays are very real and credible. In a more objective analysis, it is very likely that the best-selling websites for domestic e-books in three years will reach the following conditions:
With an average download of 3 yuan and a download volume of 50,000, the online electronic sales revenue per book can reach 150,000 yuan, and the gross profit should be around 100,000. Calculated with the sales of 100 books, the annual gross profit can reach 15 million yuan.
From the perspective of consumers, after 3 years, the number of Internet users in mainland China certainly exceeded 50 million. According to 4% of users using the paid download service, each person's annual consumption is 50 yuan, and the consumer market capacity is 100 million yuan. If we can join the online publishing market at the moment of major competition, the return will be considerable.
9. Case investigation and analysis
This time, we conducted a survey of Shanghai Science and Technology Press on the topic of “Internet publishing”.
Shanghai Science and Technology Press established its own website in 1997: initially, it mainly carried out image promotion, book information release, and mail order business development. This year, social leaders recognized that online publishing is the development trend of the international publishing industry, and also the only way for the future development of the domestic publishing industry. Therefore, it combines it with the internal informationization of the publishing house and publishes it on the Internet, that is, e-books. ) The publication was put on the agenda and gradually put into action. At present, it has signed an ASP service agreement with Founder of Peking University to lease its Apabi platform and gradually intervene in online publishing. (To be continued)
