Market research firm Gartner released a research report this week that the number of 3D printers will double in 2015. In 2013, global shipments of 3D printers with prices below US$100,000 will increase 49% year-on-year to 56,507 units.
Gartner research director Pate Basiliere said: "The 3D printer market has reached a turning point. Although it is still just a freshman market, speculation is more than technical reality, but the speed of development and interest in buyers are driving hardware, Software and service providers introduce tools and materials that are easier to use and bring higher quality works."
Gartner predicts that the total spending of end-users on 3D printers will reach US$412 million in 2013, an increase of 43% from US$288 million in 2012. Of these, 3/4 of the expenditure, or $325 million, will come from the corporate market, and the consumer market will be close to $87 million.
Gartner expects that the demand for 3D printers from companies and consumers will further increase, and technological innovation will improve the quality and performance of 3D printers. In 2014, shipments of 3D printers are expected to increase by 75% year-on-year to 98,065 units, and shipments in 2015 will nearly double. The Gartner report stated that in 2014, global 3D printer spending will increase by 62% year-on-year to US$669 million, of which corporate spending will be US$536 million, while consumer spending will reach US$133 million.
Basilil said: "With the rapid maturation of products, many organizations will explore the potential of 3D printing in the laboratory, R & D department and manufacturing department. In the next 18 months, we expect consumers' attitudes to turn from curiosity to finding Reasons to buy, and the price, application, and features of 3D printing will be more attractive."
Gartner pointed out that the current application of 3D printing technology mainly focuses on product design and production of prototype products, fixtures and fixtures in manufacturing processes, and large-scale customization of finished products. However, future 3D printing applications will cover areas such as architecture, defense, medical products, and jewelry design. The cost and complexity of 3D printers, scanners, design tools, and materials will decrease, making it easier for people to produce 3D printed items.
Gartner also expects that 3D printing will have a significant impact on many industries, including consumer products, industry and manufacturing. Currently, NASA has used 3D printing to make components for rocket engines. In addition, it plans to launch a 3D printer into space next year to help astronauts create 3D printed items while performing tasks.
