Peking University Third Hospital uses 3D printing technology to perform surgery on patients

In pelvic fracture patients undergoing orthopedic surgery, the traditional method is to fix the patient's pelvis with steel needles or steel plates. However, at the Third Hospital of Peking University in Beijing during this operation, the surgeon used a titanium implant to perform surgery. The titanium implant completely conformed to the anatomy of the pelvis. The titanium implant was produced using 3D printing technology. Liu Zhongjun has been working on this project for four years and has developed dozens of 3D brushed spine implants. "We started clinical trials late last year, and now we have more than 50 patients implanted with 3D printing," said Liu Zhongjun. "All patients recovered well. No one seems to have any adverse side effects or adverse reactions." 3D printing technology has two very good features: 1. It can print specific structures; 2. It can produce porous metals. For example, the sacral vertebrae is a strange shape. The shape of the orthopaedic implant used today is usually a geometric pattern, and it cannot be firmly attached to the bone. However, 3D printing implants are very suitable and can greatly improve coordination. "For porous metals, preclinical studies have shown that bones can grow into metal pores and enhance implantation. In the past, we clinically used titanium mesh, the growth of titanium mesh and bone, can easily collapse into bone, and lead to collapse. The 3D printed implant is perfectly in line with bone growth, not only reduces the pressure on the bones, it also allows the bones to grow into the implant, in this respect, it is more reliable than the traditional 3D printing implantation.
Currently, Liu Zhongjun and his team are waiting for the official approval of the 3D-printed orthopedic implant through Chinese health authorities.
