The origin, characteristics and basic parameters of flexible packaging printing

Flexographic printing is also often referred to as flexographic printing, which is a commonly used printing method for packaging.

1. Definition: According to the definition of China ’s printing technology standard term GB9851.4-90, flexographic printing is a printing method that uses a flexographic plate and transfers ink through an anilox roller.

2. The method of flexographic printing is to make a convex image mirror printing plate made on or polyester material-just like a potato print played by children. The amount of ink transferred to the printing plate (or plate cylinder) is controlled by the anilox roller. The printing surface is in contact with the printing material during the rotation, thereby transferring the image and text.

3. The name of flexographic printing is because it was originally used to print corrugated cardboard with a very uneven surface. It needs to keep the surface of the printing plate in contact with the cardboard, so it should have good flexibility. Moreover, the unprinted high points on the cardboard must not be printed with the remaining ink on the printing plate, which requires that the non-graphic parts of the printing plate have sufficient depth to meet this requirement.

4. The original history of flexographic printing is very inferior. In recent decades, the improvement of printing plate materials and printing plate making methods have been greatly improved-usually photographic exposure and then chemical etching, and now laser direct engraving. Printing of full-color images is also possible.

Flexographic printing was originally called stupid amine printing. It originated in the United States in the early 1920s. Because the aniline dye ink used was toxic, it has not been developed. The pharmacy was renamed as FLEXOGRAPHICPROCESS at the 14th Packaging Symposium in the United States in 1952, and was also translated to Furui Toppan Printing in Taiwan.

After the mid-1970s, due to the progress of the material industry, especially the advent of polymer resin plates and cermet anilox rolls, the development of flexographic printing has made a qualitative leap. It has become the fastest growing printing method in the world, especially in the United States. It has been fully developed. Both the manufacturing technology of printing presses and the application technology of flexo printing represent the highest level of flexographic printing. Almost all of the commodity packages seen in the US domestic market are flexographic printing products. According to statistics, the current domestic market share of flexographic printing in the US is 70% in the field of flexible packaging printing; 85% in the field of label printing; 98% in the field of corrugated paper printing; and 25% in the field of carton printing. It also accounts for 60%, 35%, 85% and 2% in Europe. In the United States, even 20% of newspapers are printed on flexographic plates. These figures are sufficient to prove the vitality of flexographic printing.

Features of flexographic printing

1) Printing ink is a low-viscosity volatile drying ink with alcohol as the main solvent. The drying speed is fast, which is suitable for high-speed multi-color printing of flexo printing. The application of non-polluting, quick-drying water-based ink is extremely beneficial to the protection of the environment.

2) The flexible plate is a photosensitive rubber or resin type printing plate, which has the characteristics of softness, flexibility and flexibility. The Shore hardness is generally between 25 and 60, and it has good transfer performance for printing ink, especially for alcohol solvent printing ink. This is incomparable between the lead and plastic versions with a Shore hardness of 75 or higher.

3) Light printing is used for printing.

4) The printing materials for flexographic printing are very extensive.

5) Good printing quality. Due to the high-quality resin plate, ceramic anilox roller and other materials, the printing accuracy has reached 175 lines / in, and the thickness of the ink layer is full, which makes the product rich in layers and colorful, especially suitable for the requirements of packaging printing. Striking color effects are often not achieved by offset printing. It combines the clarity of letterpress printing, the soft colors of offset printing, the thick ink layer of gravure printing and high gloss.

6) High production efficiency. Flexible printing equipment usually uses roll-shaped materials, which can be completed in one continuous operation from double-sided multi-color printing to glazing, laminating, bronzing, die cutting, licensing fees, winding or slitting. In lithographic offset printing, more people and multiple equipment are often used to complete three or four processes. Therefore, flexographic printing can greatly shorten the printing cycle and reduce costs, so that users have an advantage in the fiercely competitive market.

7) Easy operation and maintenance. The printing machine adopts the anilox roller inking system. Compared with the offset printing machine and the relief printing machine, the complicated inking mechanism is omitted, so that the operation and maintenance of the printing machine are greatly simplified, and the inking control and response are faster. In addition, the printing machine is generally equipped with a set of plate cylinders that can adapt to different printing repetition lengths, and is particularly suitable for packaging prints with frequently changing specifications.

8) High printing speed. The printing speed is generally 1.5 to 2 times that of offset presses and gravure presses, realizing high-speed multi-color printing.

9) Low investment and high income.

Modern flexographic printing presses have the advantages of ink transmission lines, few ink transmission parts, and the extremely light printing pressure of flexographic printing presses, which makes flexographic printing presses simple in structure and saves a lot of materials for processing. Therefore, the investment of the machine is much lower than that of the offset press of the same color group, and it is only 30% ~ 50% of the investment of the gravure press of the same color group. The characteristics of flexographic plate making: In plate making, the flexographic plate making cycle is short, easy to transport, and the cost is much lower than gravure printing. Although the cost of plate-making is several times higher than that of the PS version of offset printing, it can be compensated for the printing durability, because the printing resistance of the flexographic printing plate ranges from 500,000 to several million printing (the printing resistance of the offset printing plate is 100,000 to 300,000 printing) .
